Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra Treatment in WinchesterDermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a common benign skin blemish in people with black, Asian & Polynesian skin. DPN are 1mm to 5mm, smooth, firm, dark brown or black overgrowths of skin which are mainly found on the full face and neck areas. Some individuals may also suffer from Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra on the torso. They affect around one-third of black Americans and the actor Morgan Freeman is a classic example. Although this skin condition usually starts in adolescence, the occurrence, number and size of these benign lesions increase with age, with females more prone than males. DPN is likely to be genetically determined with 40-50% of patients having a family history. It’s thought to be caused by a defect in the development of hair follicles or pores.

Treatment for Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra

Newer and smaller Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are easier to treat compared to the older more established ones. The basis of treatment for DPN involves using a small blunt needle the size of an eyelash which releases heat at its tip. The needle uses diathermy to remove each lesion, though some are not able to be removed straight away, they will drop off after a few days. After their removal, scabs may form to protect the areas whilst the natural healing process takes place. Once the scabs drop off after around 7-10 days, the fresh skin areas continue to regenerate to leave lovely fresh new healthy-looking skin.

Possible Issues To Consider:  The darker the person’s skin colour, the more risk there is with any treatment of hyperpigmentation (darkening), hypopigmentation (lightening) or keloid scarring. Although I never overtreat an area and this treatment is very superficial, there is still a small risk with such a minor procedure.

* PLEASE NOTE: I am unable to treat an person who is either pregnant / could be pregnant, or has a Pacemaker or a Defibrillator fiited.
