Xanthelasma is a condition which affects the appearance around the eyes. It displays as yellowish or milky coloured areas and can affect both the upper and lower eye sockets. Newer conditions usually show small flat yellowish colours within the skin texture. Whereas older more establishes cases are often more noticeable, due to their size and slightly raised appearance.
What Causes Xanthelasma?
The medical community is unsure as to the exact cause of these deposits. However, there is a link between xanthelasma and abnormal lipid levels in the blood, which is known as dyslipidemia. A person is diagnosed with dyslipidemia if they have: high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or “bad” cholesterol. Having said this, of the many people I have successfully treated for this condition, only around 50% are aware of the cholesterol link and of those I would say that at least 90% have had their levels checked and are within the normal safe limits.
Firstly, I would never carry this treatment out without first allowing some numbing cream to take effect. The area is then treated using a blunt needle the size of an eyelash. At no stage is the needle inserted into the skin. It just uses heat at controlled levels to gradually cauterise the tissue, allowing the discoloured areas to be fully treated. It is not removed there and then, instead, the dead tissue forms a scab which drops off after around 10-14 days. Initially, the area is pink due to the newly formed skin, but over the next few weeks, the skin regenerates further still. During this stage, makeup or concealers etc can be applied.
NOTE: There are no reasons to be concerned about treatments around your eyes. This is an extremely safe and effective treatment which does not involve lasers, chemicals, products, freezing or injections. Unfortunately, even after successful treatment, Xanthelasma does tend to gradually return after a period of 12-18months. The key is to manage it and not let the condition get out of control. It can very easily be controlled and kept in check within a 5-30 minute (size dependent) treatment every year or so.
