Age Spots

Age spots are also referred to as Liver Spots, Sun Spots, Solar Lentigines or Hyperpigmentation.

What are these darker patches of skin?

They are basically, damaged areas of the skin usually caused by the suns harmful UV rays over many years. Although they are completely harmless, age spots can be unsightly and very ageing. With time the areas become bigger and darker, but the real problem when treating them is when they’ve been left too long and have gradually made their way from the top layers of skin (the epidermis), to the deeper layer below (the dermis). They are then much harder to treat and often beyond help. Having said that, I am able to treat the vast majority of people who see me.

Usually, the only times I am unable to treat a person is when they are over the age of say 60-65, or someone who has too much, or they are too deep and would benefit more from a laser or IPL based treatment. At this time I am unable to suggest anyone who I am confident enough to trust and recommend.

Age Spot Treatment

The basis of age spot removal involves using a small blunt needle the size of an eyelash which releases heat at its tip. The needle uses diathermy to remove each age spot. Most newer ones come away nicely, whereas the older lesions often take a little more time. Either way, when I clear an area of a persons skin it literally turns the clock back as far as the perception of a persons skin condition or age is concerned.

What To Expect After Treatment

After age spot removal, and depending at which stage they had progressed to, scabs may form to protect the areas whilst the natural healing process takes place. Once the scabs drop off after around 7-10 days, the fresh pink skin areas continue to regenerate to leave lovely fresh new healthy-looking skin. It’s imperative at this stage after the scabs fall off to protect the new fresh skin with a decent UVA & UVB sunscreen. The new skin is still recovering and has yet to protect itself with new melanin production. Use a minimum of factor 30 and reapply throughout the day if outdoors. Better still, cover-up.

NOTE: Please do not consider having this or any laser treatment if you’re planning a sunny holiday within 2 months of treatment

Please note: This treatment is not suitable for those with pacemakers, defibrillators, cochlear ear implants, or women who are, or, could be pregnant. Asian and darker skin types are not treated due to the increased risk of scarring.
