Syringoma

What are Syringoma and what do they look like?

Syringoma is a skin condition presenting in skin coloured or yellowish firm rounded bump(s), usually just a few millimetres in diameter. They are most often found in clusters by or under the eyes, but they may also arise elsewhere on the face, in the armpits, belly button, upper chest and vulva.

What Causes Syringoma?

Syringoma are purely an overgrowth of cells in overactive sweat glands (also known as the eccrine glands) and are of no medical concern. They start to appear in adolescence, are more common in women than men and can be hereditary. Eruptive syringomas appear abruptly in adult life, as a crop of multiple lesions.

Syringoma Treatment

Firstly, don’t be taken in by claims that microdermabrasion, skin peels, freezing (cryo) and laser treatments would be a suitable remedy. They won’t and some can do more damage than good. The single best treatment is diathermy, especially for those sensitive and delicate under eye areas.

Diathermy involves using a small needle the size of an eyelash, which is blunt at the tip and releases heat at a controlled rate. This in turn cauterises the overgrowth of tissue which then forms a scab. After usually 7-10 days the scabs drop off revealing a smoother and more even complexion. Gradually over the coming weeks, the skin regenerates further.

For this treatment, numbing cream is applied as soon as you come into the treatment room. This then takes effect whilst the consultation of paperwork, an explanation of the treatment procedure and the asscociated aftercare is explained.
